Why this matters
Nexi’s early involvement in the digital euro pilot gives it a first-mover advantage in shaping CBDC‑based payment products and gaining familiarity with the ECB’s infrastructure. This positions the firm ahead of rivals that may wait for broader rollout, potentially influencing merchant adoption and payment‑processing strategies. For the ECB, securing participation from a major PSP like Nexi validates the distribution model that relies on private providers, boosting confidence in the digital euro’s eventual market uptake.
